Smart Widgets

Overview

As an interaction designer in Oracle Applications User Experience (OAUX) team, I worked with design managers, project managers, developers and researchers to envision forms of smart enterprise app experience from core component perspective. Designed to be lightweighted and contextually dynamic, smart widgets allow users to accomplish fast and simple actions in timely fashion, and serves as an essential part of our vision in smart UX.

Problem Space

How do users perform daily tasks throughout an enterprise day?

Our purpose is to surface the most urgent tasks from various applications and push them into the front end of our enterprise experience, allowing users to perform simple tasks with a quick glance and a few clicks. Such experience should be empowering to use, and highly enhancing in efficiency.

Our core task is to push actionable items into the home experience, which currently focuses on information access and filtered display. With our existing landing page mainly serving as an information portal with a number of supportive components, we had to consider potential challenges while pushing our new actionable items into the scene.

Complete daily tasks on the go

Have urgent tasks ready at fingertip

Identify, verify, commit key actions in seconds

We looked for use cases that represent the very moments when fast, reliable actions may come in handy. The action may take place right in the field, potentially through various devices such as smart phone, tablet, or smart watch. This requires a consistent and reliable user experience and ways of interaction.

Defining Challenges

Integration with current UI system

Extensibility and scalability across platforms and applications

Balancing smart assistance and user control

Balancing simplicity in use and complexity of functionality

Reflections

  • The dynamic widget project is my first try in designing enterprise applications. While utilizing the same usability principles and methods, I find it insufficient to design out of my own experience, as enterprise application involves users and contexts I am personally unfamiliary with. Being innovative thus also requires more solid research and deep understanding in our customers, for playing the user role by myself no longer meets its purpose.

  • Designing for enterprise application also calls for a delicate balance point between functional complexity and experiential simplicity, especially when the very functionalities take considerable effort to master. A clear picture of the core priorities becomes even more important given the large number of potential problems from the highly various user base.

  • The extensive design practice for core patterns also leads to reflections upon extensibility and scalability of design across conditions. The effort to standardize and unify a central pattern may backfire when investigation and understanding of context is insufficient.

  • Overall, with our project focusing on the mutual enhancement of backend data and front-end interface, it is necessary to establish seamless cooperation among different team players including designers, managers, architects and developers. The highly dynamic environment pushed me to shapen my communication skills, and learn the correct channels and timings to share my part of the work, making the best value out of my creativity.
